††††††Christian was the first native American born male in this line of the Shryock family.  It seems as though he also holds the distinction of giving us the name Shryock, according to the court records of the day.  He was born in Frederick County, Maryland some 2 years after his parents came to this country.  Christian was baptized on October 10, 1735 in Christ Lutheran Church in York, Pennsylvania e.

††††††From the available records, Christian is portrayed as a very upright man, with a deep seated religious and community-oriented spirit.  The following account of his death appeared in The Frederick Herald of October 19, 1822:

"Died - On Thursday the 10th inst., in the vicinity of Craeger's Town, Mr. Christopher Schroyock, in the 89th year of his age, having sustained an unblemished reputation through his life."

††††††Note the two errors in this announcement: the name Christopher undoubtedly was taken from the abbreviation of Chr. for Christian, and he died in his 88th year, not his 89th.  This mention of his "unblemished reputation" certainly underscores the opinion that his friends and neighbors held of him.  On several occasions Christian participated in actions that were for the benefit of his church or community.  A deed dated May 5, 1774 was to Christian Shriock and John Smith, Trustees of the Lutheran Church, and George Zimmerman and Charles Pallsell, Trustees of the Presbyterian Church of Frederick County for a tract of land called "Partnership" for the use of a schoolhouse and chapel or place of divine worship for the congregations of the Lutheran and Presbyterian churches.  This clearly shows Christian's interest in the development of religious and educational enrichment for his community. Also, in the records of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Frederick is the following mention:

" Index and account of such members of the Congregation, and of other generously intentioned hearts in and near Frederickstown, as have contributed a freewill offering towards the interior improvement and completion of the Ev. Lutheran Church in above-named town, drawn from the list set down Anno. 1763, 29th May. (N.B. The following have all paid )...

††††††He was clearly deeply involved in his church and community.

††††††Several deeds are recorded in Frederick County bearing Christian's name. The earliest of these is dated May 22, 1761 as a "release from down" from Mary Ann Robinger. In some of these deeds Christian is listed as a shoemaker, and as a farmer in others. Some of these deeds mention Christian's wife as Mary ( August 15, 1769 ) and in another deed as Eva Maria ( April 15, 1788 ).

††††††Since Christian was an adult during the period covering the Revolutionary War, it is important to note that no record has been discovered indicating that he fought in the war.

††††††From the will of Christian, it can be seen that he was not able to sign his name ( he attested to the will with "his mark" ). Christian's family name was also misspelled as Schroyock. It is interesting to note that this is the same spelling that appeared in his obituary in The Frederick Herald. It is entirely possible and even likely that this misspelling of his family name was simply a error made by the court clerk that transcribed the will into the county records. Because of the popular authority of the county records in those days, it is likely that the local newspaper took the spelling from the county records.
