William Shryock, son of Adam and Rosanah Shryock was born in Frederick County, Maryland. In the early 1800's, approximately 1807 he moved with his family to the wilderness of Kentucky - probably Woodford County. It is likely that William grew up in Mortonsville, as he was later to serve as its postmaster from 1828 until 1834 m.
The census records of 1820 show that William lived in Mortonsville and was engaged in commerce of an unspecified nature. At this time his family consisted of 3 sons and 2 daughters, as shown in the table below
